Special Issue Description

Family planning refers to a woman’s freedom to decide whether or not she conceives and whether to carry her pregnancy to term. There is still a significant disconnect between women’s reproductive goals and their access to safe abortion and contraception in many regions of the world. In 2015, 12% of married or in-union women worldwide had unmet family planning needs, according to data gathered by the United Nations Population Division. The proportion of unmet demand varies greatly by area, from 26% in Central Africa to 5% in Eastern Asia. Unmet need is influenced by a variety of reasons, such as a lack of information and resources, fear of adverse effects, and family members’ rejection. Maternal health is greatly impacted by family planning. In 2008, the use of contraception prevented about 44% of maternal fatalities worldwide. One theory for how this happens is that using contraception lowers the number of high-risk and high-parity deliveries, which lowers maternal mortality. The availability of contraceptives also aids in preventing undesired pregnancies, some of which lead to unsafe abortions, which are one of the main causes of maternal fatalities worldwide. For this special edition of the International Journal of Community Health Nursing, we cordially welcome you to submit your research on Family planning, and maternal and child health.
