Abstract

Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder characterized by disturbances in thought, perception, emotion, and behavior that can significantly impair an individual’s functioning and quality of life. Mental health nurses play a pivotal role in the comprehensive management of schizophrenia through patient-centered and evidence-based interventions. This article critically examines the effectiveness of nurse-led strategies in the management of schizophrenia, with particular emphasis on pharmacological support, psychosocial interventions, psychoeducation, therapeutic communication, relapse prevention, and community-based care. Evidence published over the past ten years is synthesized to assess the impact of these interventions on clinical and psychosocial outcomes, including symptom reduction, medication adherence, relapse prevention, functional recovery, and quality of life. The reviewed evidence indicates that nurse-led interventions can contribute significantly to improved treatment adherence, symptom management, patient engagement, self-management, and overall psychosocial functioning. Therapeutic communication and psychoeducation further support patients and caregivers in understanding the illness, managing symptoms, recognizing early warning signs, and preventing relapse. Community-based nursing interventions also promote continuity of care and facilitate reintegration into family and community settings. The findings highlight the essential contribution of mental health nurses to multidisciplinary schizophrenia care and emphasize the need for strengthened nursing education, structured clinical training, continuous professional development, and supportive mental health policies. Integrating evidence-based nurse-led interventions into routine schizophrenia care may improve long-term outcomes and enhance the quality of life of individuals living with schizophrenia.
