Abstract

The present article highlights on the medicinal value of leeches. Leech belongs to phylum Annelida have played a significant role in ancient medicine for centuries, with their therapeutic and medicinal applications dating back to ancient human civilizations such as those of Egypt, Greece, and India. Historically, incidences shows it associated with blood letting, leeches were believed to restore balance to the body’s humors. In recent times, new experiments are being seen in the treatment method. Along with this, ancient therapies are also used to some extent in the treatment method. One of these treatment methods is using animals like leeches. It is called leech treatment in modern times. Animals like leeches have been used medicinally since ancient times. One of the main and prominent reason for turning to leech therapy is, its ability to improve blood circulation in human. Leech saliva contains bioactive substances. Studies showed that such substances act as anticoagulants. It stops the blood from clotting. As a result blood circulation becomes smooth. This medicinal property of Leech review focuses on the medicinal and pharmacological benefits of Leech in prevention and treatment of diseases. This article intended to explore leech and its therapy, highlights its evolution from traditional practice to scientifically supported medicine practices, and provides insights into specific applications in the conventional healthcare system.
