Abstract
One of the main causes of permanent blindness, glaucoma is defined by gradual damage to the optic nerve, mostly brought on by oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and high intraocular pressure (IOP). The investigation of herbal alternatives is necessary since current synthetic therapies, such as beta-blockers and prostaglandin analogs, frequently result in ocular discomfort, systemic toxicity, and poor patient compliance. Clitoria ternatea contains kaempferol, a bioactive flavonoid that has shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective qualities, making it a viable option for treating glaucoma. The molecular mechanisms of Kaempferol in the treatment of glaucoma are examined in this review, with a focus on how it reduces oxidative stress, inhibits IL-1β-mediated neuroinflammation, and improves aqueous humor outflow. Molecular docking studies indicate its promise as an alternative anti-glaucoma treatment by confirming its great binding affinity to important glaucoma-related proteins as matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II). Kaempferol’s benefits over synthetic medications, such as its long-term safety and few adverse effects, are highlighted by comparative studies. In order to maximize Kaempferol’s bioavailability and therapeutic use in ocular formulations, this work emphasizes the necessity of additional computational validation and experimental investigation. Kaempferol-based therapies may offer a safer, more efficient substitute for the treatment of glaucoma by combining contemporary drug discovery methods with herbal pharmacology, therefore bridging the gap between modern pharmacology and traditional medicine.
