Abstract

The increasing deployment of 5G, emerging 6G networks, and energy-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices has intensified the need for sustainable wireless communication technologies that can simultaneously support reliable information transmission and efficient energy utilization. Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) provides a promising solution by enabling radio-frequency signals to support both information decoding and energy harvesting. However, the performance of SWIPT systems is strongly affected by channel conditions, power-allocation strategies, receiver power-splitting decisions, and the inherent trade-off between data transmission and energy harvesting. This study develops an energy-efficient resource-allocation framework that integrates a modified water-filling power-allocation algorithm with adaptive power splitting for SWIPT-enabled green wireless communication. The proposed approach dynamically allocates transmission power according to instantaneous channel conditions while maintaining harvested-energy and quality-of-service requirements. An alternating optimization procedure is employed to iteratively update the transmit-power allocation and power-splitting ratio. The system is evaluated through MATLAB-based Monte Carlo simulations using Rayleigh fading, log-distance path loss, additive white Gaussian noise, and practical transmit-power and energy-conversion constraints. The proposed Water-Filling Power Splitting (WF-PS) scheme is compared with Uniform Power Splitting (UPS) and Time Switching (TS). Simulation results demonstrate that WF-PS consistently achieves higher throughput, energy efficiency, and harvested energy across the evaluated operating conditions. The proposed method also provides a superior spectral-efficiency–harvested-energy trade-off, indicating that adaptive channel-aware power allocation can utilize available RF resources more effectively than static power splitting or time switching. These findings demonstrate the potential of adaptive SWIPT resource allocation as an effective strategy for improving the energy sustainability and communication performance of future green wireless networks.
