Abstract

Simultaneous pollutant removal and biomass valorization has made microalgae an attractive and innovative solution to wastewater treatment, which could be considered a sustainable, low cost, and low energy approach. Considering their ability to store carbon dioxide, resorb nutrients, and produce valuable bioproducts, they represent an alternative with ecological potential to other previously used treatment methods. This review discusses how microalgae are used in industrial applications including biofuels, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agriculture, as well as in wastewater treatment systems. The environmental benefits of the microalgal technologies are also highlighted, in terms of generation of greenhouse gases and the recovery of resources. However, although these benefits are quite appealing, some serious barriers to early widespread adoption related to scalability, cost effectiveness and regulatory frameworks remain. Advances in bioreactor design, genetic engineering, and automation present promising avenues for future research and industrial implementation. Microalgae treatment systems help to solve these limitations by providing a method of a circular economy and sustainable water management.
