Abstract

Colon cancer, a rapidly advancing disease worldwide, involves the carcinogenesis of the distal part of the intestine. This malignancy progresses through various developmental stages necessitating diverse treatment approaches. Traditional treatments include drug therapy and chemotherapy; however, emerging methods, such as the use of phytochemical compounds offer promising mechanisms for combating this disease. Phytochemical compounds derived from natural food sources, including flavonoids, tannins, resveratrol, and epigallocatechin-3-gallate, exhibit potent anti-cancer properties. They act by modulating epigenetic or epigenomic mechanisms, thereby exerting anti-cancer activities. This review aims to explore the different types of colon cancer, associated risk factors, and the potential of natural agents derived from plant sources. Various in vivo and in vitro models will be discussed to elucidate the efficacy of these natural compounds in colon cancer prevention and treatment. Furthermore, the review will delve into the specific mechanisms by which these phytochemical compounds target cancer cells and inhibit tumor growth. The synergistic effects of these compounds, along with their low toxicity profiles, make them promising candidates for both preventive and therapeutic interventions against colon cancer. Plant sources rich in these bioactive compounds, such as fruits (e.g., berries, citrus fruits), vegetables (e.g., broccoli, spinach), and herbs (e.g., turmeric, garlic), will be highlighted for their potential in combating colon cancer and improving overall health outcomes. Additionally, the challenges and future directions in utilizing phytochemicals for colon cancer management will be discussed, providing valuable insights for further research and clinical applications.
