Abstract

Composite materials which will provide for improved mechanical properties – a focus there to develop light weight, more rugged, stronger ship hull materials. The various application of glass fibers reinforced composites can be seen in the marine applications, such as boat hull, but in case of failing badly, they are non-recyclable and poses the threat to health hazards for aquatic animals and human beings which is their significant disadvantage. MARPOL Annex V, which considers plastic as a main polluter entering the sea (that should be completely banned and totally prohibited by ships) through discharge into a marine environment or ingestion causing damage and death to marine life or any fragmentation on harmful microplastics continue to pose serious threats – followed by ever stricter regulations from 2025 and more IMO initiatives aimed at achieving zero plastic release – resulting in an increasing demand for natural fiber-based composites material for ship hull. Natural fibers are the plant-based fiber products of Hemp, Flax, Kenaf, and bamboo, etc. Natural fiber composites (hemp/epoxy, kenaf/epoxy, flax/epoxy, and bamboo/epoxy) made utilizing the land-lay-up manufacturing process will be manufactured and characterized in this work. The staking sequence and fiber orientation is (00-450-1350-00, 00-900-00–900 and 450–00–1350–00).

Keywords: Ship hull materials, composite material, natural composite material, natural fibers, plant-based.
