Abstract

The present study addresses the safety issues associated with the nitration reactions. Since the nitration reaction is highly exothermic in nature exhibiting intense heat during the operation and may explode if wrongly handled, the risk assessment of nitration reaction is absolutely necessary. In the present work, the production of Ortho Nitro Chloro Benzene (ONCB) and Para Nitro Chloro Benzene (PNCB) is considered to perform the risk assessment of the nitration reaction. The production of ONCB and PNCB mainly classified into six steps namely mixing and reaction, separation, washing, neutralization, separation and distillation. In the mentioned sequence the Hazard Operability (HAZOP) study was performed to identify the process deviation, its root causes and its consequences. The preventive and mitigating actions were also identified using the HAZOP study. The HAZOP study formed the basis of further risk assessment using fault tree and event tree methods. The fault tree of the thermal runaway was analysed further to understand the criticality of the nitration process.

Keywords: Risk assessment, nitration reaction, hazard operability, fault tree, event tree.
