Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the status, challenges, and opportunities of school libraryservices in Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal. A survey method was adopted to collect primary data from higher secondary schools located within Jalpaiguri Municipality. A structured questionnaire was administered to librarians or library in-charges of selected schools, and field visits were conducted to observe the existing library infrastructure and services. The study revealed that a significant variation
in the availability of library collections, infrastructure, and management practices among the surveyed schools. While a few libraries possess relatively large collections and rare materials, most suffer from limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and the absence of modern information technologies. The study further identifies several challenges faced by librarians, including lack of administrative support, financial constraints, shortage of professional staff, insufficient space, and declining reader interest.
The absence of computers, internet connectivity, and automation systems indicates a major gap in integrating information and communication technologies into school library services. The study suggests improving infrastructure, strengthening collections, recruiting qualified librarians, and adopting digital technologies to enhance the effectiveness of school libraries and support the academic development of students in the district.
