Abstract
Luminescence, defined as the emission of light without significant heat generation, represents a fundamental phenomenon bridging physics, chemistry, materials science, and biotechnology. Over the centuries, the understanding of luminescence has evolved from simple observational curiosity to a sophisticated quantum-mechanical framework describing electronic transitions in atoms, molecules, and solids. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the historical development, fundamental mechanisms, classifications, and material systems associated with luminescence. It places particular emphasis on key photophysical processes such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, and nonradiative pathways that govern emission efficiency. The article further examines diverse excitation mechanisms—including optical, electrical, chemical, and mechanical stimuli—that induce luminescent behavior. A detailed discussion of advanced luminescent materials, such as organic luminophores, inorganic phosphors, rare-earth-doped systems, quantum dots, metal–organic frameworks, and carbon-based nanomaterials, highlights their unique optical properties and functional versatility. These materials underpin a wide spectrum of applications, including optoelectronics, biomedical imaging, environmental sensing, forensic analysis, radiation detection, and anti-counterfeiting technologies. Recent advancements in nanotechnology, defect engineering, and energy transfer mechanisms have significantly enhanced luminescence efficiency, tunability, and stability. Looking forward, integrating intelligent material design with sustainable, eco-friendly approaches is expected to drive innovation in photonic devices and biomedical diagnostics. This review aims to provide a cohesive understanding of luminescence and its expanding role in next-generation technologies.
