Abstract
The temperature performance profile of the plant extracts shows that inhibition efficiency increased with increasing temperature of the system until at about 323K at 9.00hrs immersion time where a decline in inhibition efficiency occurred implying the opposite at higher temperatures and longer immersion time. Corrosion rate parameters changed with rise in temperature and exposure – immersion time. Plots of rates of corrosion against the volume(s) of the test inhibitor(s) in the corrosive mixture shows that at all volume(s) of the test inhibitor(s) – GF or SM water-based extract used there exists a visible and significant decrease in the value(s) of corrosion rate as the acid often struggles continuously to break and overcome the thin film barrier formed by capable molecules of the extract(s) on the metal surfaces. GC-MS and FT-IR analyses results confirm that SM & GF plant extracts contain molecules capable of inhibiting corrosion on medium carbon steel. SEM surface microstructure surface photographs show SM or GF water-based plant extract at higher volumes than the 1.0M HCl in the corrodent mixture had less pits and cracks on the carbon steel metal samples implying great reduction in the rate of corrosion on the medium carbon steel samples by phytochemical molecules of great affinity for MCS metal samples in the corrodent medium. The Weight Loss (g) with respect to Time, T(hrs) for MCS metal samples corrosion rate inhibition in complementary presence of varying volumes of SM plant extract, GF plant extract & 1.0 Molar concentration HCl corrosive solution at room temperature at different immersion time was monitored. Also, the Weight Loss (g) in teams of Temperature effect, T(K) for MCS metal samples corrosion rate inhibition in complementary presence of varying volumes of SM plant extract, GF plant extract & 1.0 Molar concentration HCl corrosive solution at room temperature at constant immersion time (3hrs), (6hrs) and (9hrs) was monitored as well.
