Abstract

The growing integration of distributed generation (DG) units in contemporary distribution networks has introduced new challenges related to power losses, voltage regulation, and reactive power management. This study outlines an OPF-based approach for the effective distribution and sizing of distributed generators (DGs) and distribution static compensators (D-STATCOMs) in a distribution system. The major aim is to reduce actual power losses while enhancing the voltage profile and ensuring acceptable operational conditions across the network. Although DG integration can minimize network losses and meet local power demand, insufficient reactive power management may adversely influence bus voltages and increase power losses, particularly at electrically weak sites. In order to solve this problem, D-STATCOM is included to enable voltage control and offer dynamic reactive power compensation. The suggested technique takes the distribution network’s operational characteristics and reactive power needs into account when determining the proper placements and capacities of DG units and D-STATCOMs. The IEEE 9-bus test system is used to assess the efficacy of the suggested method in various DG and D-STATCOM setups. Simulation findings suggest that coordinated placement and size of DGs and D-STATCOMs may effectively minimize actual power losses and enhance the voltage profile compared with conventional network operation and DG-only systems. The findings further show how coordinated DG and D-STATCOM integration may improve distribution networks’ overall dependability, voltage performance, and operational efficiency. Thus, the suggested OPF-based method can offer a helpful foundation for the effective design and management of contemporary distribution networks with dispersed energy resources. In recent years, the co-ordinated integration of DGs and D-STATCOMs in power distribution systems has emerged as an influential research area, attracting significant interest from researchers, scientists, and industry practitioners.
