Abstract
Green bioprocess engineering is a sustainable approach that improves industrial production by combining biotechnology with eco-friendly engineering methods. It uses biological processes – such as microbes, enzymes, and renewable resources – to produce useful products with a reduced environmental impact. Unlike traditional methods that depend on fossil fuels and generate significant waste, green bioprocessing focuses on conserving resources, improving energy efficiency, and minimizing waste. Using biomass and agro-industrial waste as renewable sources helps create cleaner production processes and reduces dependence on non-renewable resources. Key components of green bioprocessing include advanced bioreactor systems, microbial and enzyme engineering, and environmentally friendly down-stream processing, which help boost production while lowering environmental effects. This field is applied in various sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and environmental protection through processes like bioremediation and wastewater treatment. These applications support sustainable resource management and help cut down carbon emissions. However, challenges – like high initial costs and limitations in scaling up – still exist. With advancements in automation, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence, green bioprocessing is expected to become more efficient and scalable, making it a crucial part of sustainable industrial growth.
