Microelectronics Journal (JOMSD): Scope, Indexing and How to Publish in 2026

Every smartphone, electric vehicle and IoT sensor depends on advances in microelectronics. As device dimensions shrink and power budgets tighten, researchers need a credible venue to share work on transistors, circuits and memory — and they need a decision in weeks, not quarters.

The Journal of Microelectronics and Solid State Devices (JOMSD) is a peer-reviewed microelectronics journal published since 2014 by STM Journals. It covers the field from device physics to circuit design, with a typical peer review window of 4–6 weeks.

This guide explains what this microelectronics journal publishes, where it is indexed, how it compares to other venues, and exactly how to submit your manuscript.

Why Microelectronics Research Matters Now

Traditional CMOS scaling is reaching physical limits. Leakage current, heat dissipation and short-channel effects make each new process node harder to achieve.

The field is responding in three main ways:

  • New transistor architectures such as FinFET and gate-all-around devices
  • New materials, including hafnium-oxide ferroelectrics for memory
  • New design methods, including machine learning for device optimization

Peer-reviewed semiconductor device research is how these ideas get validated and shared. It is also how they eventually move from lab to fab.

Research Areas Covered by JOMSD

The full JOMSD Focus and Scope lists accepted topics. Core areas include the following.

VLSI Design and Low-Power Circuits

The microelectronics journal welcomes work on VLSI circuit design, low-power digital and analog circuits, and design optimization, including emerging approaches such as multi-valued logic.

Semiconductor Devices and MOSFET Technology

MOSFET research remains central. This includes device modeling, nanoscale transistor engineering and TCAD simulation, along with work addressing scaling challenges beyond conventional CMOS.

Non-Volatile Memory and Ferroelectric Materials

Memory technology is a growing focus for this microelectronics journal: ferroelectric RAM (FeRAM), hafnium-oxide ferroelectrics and other non-volatile memory devices built for faster, more reliable storage.

Sensors, Biomedical Devices and IoT

MOSFET-based sensor design is increasingly relevant, particularly for biomedical and environmental sensing, reflecting how microelectronics now intersects with healthcare and connected devices.

Machine Learning for Device Optimization

The microelectronics journal publishes research applying machine learning to semiconductor problems, such as ML-assisted optimization of nanoscale MOSFET parameters using TCAD data.

Emerging Frontiers

Scope also extends to neuromorphic computing hardware, quantum device architectures and advanced packaging, where device engineering and computing architecture converge.

Recent Research Published in JOMSD

The clearest way to judge a microelectronics journal is to read what it actually publishes.

High Performance Multi-Valued Logic (MVL) Gate Design Using FinFET
This ahead-of-print study addresses the challenges CMOS scaling faces: leakage, power dissipation and short channel effects. Multi-valued logic encodes more than two states per line, reducing interconnect count and switching activity. Implementing MVL gates in FinFET rather than planar CMOS attacks both the leakage and density problems at once. It is representative of the circuit-level work JOMSD publishes.

Taken together, these papers show a journal focused on device- and circuit-level engineering rather than broad electronics. If your work sits in that space, your paper will be read by an audience that understands it.

Indexing and Visibility

Indexing determines how easily other researchers find and cite your work. This microelectronics journal is indexed in:

How JOMSD Compares to Other Microelectronics Journals

Choosing where to submit is a trade-off between speed, cost and reach. Here is where JOMSD sits.

The practical difference is turnaround. A doctoral candidate who needs a publication before a thesis deadline, or a team that must show output before a funding review, cannot wait nine months for a first decision. JOMSD’s 4–6 week review window exists for exactly this case, and the hybrid model means you are not forced into an APC if your funding does not cover one.

What JOMSD does not claim is the citation volume of a decades-old society journal. If your paper is a landmark result and you have twelve months to spare, a high-JIF venue may serve you better. For solid, well-executed work in VLSI design, MOSFET research or memory devices that deserves rapid dissemination, this microelectronics journal is the better fit.

Who Should Submit to JOMSD

  • PhD scholars who need a peer-reviewed microelectronics publication within a fixed timeline
  • Faculty publishing incremental but rigorous device or circuit results
  • Industry R&D engineers sharing applied findings from semiconductor process or design work
  • Authors of review articles synthesising a narrow area of solid state devices
  • Teams presenting simulation-based studies using TCAD, SPICE or equivalent tools

Peer Review and Editorial Standards

Manuscripts undergo initial scope screening, then double-blind review by two or more subject experts. Decisions are based on rigor, originality and significance, and the typical review window is 4–6 weeks.

The editorial board is led by Dr. Devendra Kr. Tripathi, Professor at Shambhunath Institute of Engineering & Technology, and includes practicing researchers from institutions in several countries.

How to Submit to JOMSD

1. Check Scope and Guidelines

Confirm your topic fits the Focus and Scope, then format your manuscript per the JOMSD Author Guidelines.

2. Choose Your Article Type

The microelectronics journal accepts Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Short Communications, Case Studies, Perspectives and Special Issue papers. Research articles typically run 4,000–8,000 words; reviews may run longer.

3. Submit Online

Create an account on the manuscript submission portal and upload your manuscript, abstract, keywords and supplementary files. The portal provides real-time status tracking and direct communication with the editorial office.

4. Peer Review and Revision

If reviewers request changes, submit your revised manuscript with a point-by-point response to each comment.

5. Publication

Accepted papers appear in the next available issue or as ahead-of-print articles, with a DOI assigned so your findings can be cited immediately.

Article Processing Charges

As a hybrid open-access journal, JOMSD charges an APC for open-access publication. APCs fund peer review, production and hosting, and waivers or discounts may be available. Current fees are listed on the STM Journals website.

Pre-Submission Checklist for Authors

Most desk rejections at any microelectronics journal come from avoidable formatting and scope errors, not weak science. Work through this list before you upload.

  1. Scope match confirmed. Name the specific sub-area in your cover letter.
  2. Article type chosen correctly. Each type has different length and structure expectations.
  3. Length appropriate. 4,000–8,000 words for research articles.
  4. Structure complete. Title, abstract, keywords, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion, references.
  5. Abstract self-contained. 200–250 words: problem, method, key result, significance. No citations, no undefined abbreviations.
  6. Keywords selected. 4–6 terms a reader would actually search — “FinFET”, “nanoscale MOSFET”, “ferroelectric memory”.
  7. Figures legible. Minimum 300 dpi, labelled axes with units, standalone captions.
  8. References consistent. Follow the journal citation style; verify every DOI resolves.
  9. Plagiarism checked. Include self-plagiarism from your own prior papers.
  10. Copyright agreement and APC understood before acceptance, not after.

Authors who complete all ten items typically clear initial scope screening without a revision request.

Common Reasons Manuscripts Are Rejected

Rejection is usually not a judgment on your ability. These are the recurring causes.

Out of scope. The single most common cause. A paper on power system protection or communication protocols is not a solid state devices paper, however good it is.

No clear novelty statement. “We simulated a MOSFET” is not a contribution. “We show a 23% leakage reduction over the baseline structure at 7 nm” is.

Unvalidated simulation. TCAD and SPICE results not calibrated against published measurements are treated as unverified. State your tool, version, model parameters and calibration reference.

Missing comparison with prior work. Compare against at least two published alternatives under matched conditions.

Weak literature review. Citing only work older than five years signals the authors are not current in a field where process nodes change every two years.

Poor figure quality. Simulator screenshots and unlabelled axes force revision rounds that delay publication by weeks.

Language clarity. Non-native English is never itself a rejection reason, but reviewers must be able to follow the method.

Similarity index too high. Reused method paragraphs from your own earlier papers still count.
