Abstract

Real-time system monitoring is a fundamental aspect of system administration in UNIX/Linux environments, as it ensures optimal system performance, reliability, and continuous availability of services. In modern computing infrastructures, systems are expected to operate efficiently under varying workloads, and any degradation in performance, such as CPU overload, memory exhaustion, disk bottlenecks, or network congestion, can significantly impact user experience and system stability. Regular observation and prompt action are crucial for ensuring the system remains stable and avoiding potential breakdowns. Existing monitoring solutions, including enterprise-grade tools and third-party applications, provide comprehensive features such as graphical dashboards, predictive analytics, and centralized control. However, such tools typically demand significant system resources, involve complicated setup processes, and require continuous upkeep. Additionally, they may depend on external libraries or proprietary software, making them less suitable for lightweight environments, embedded systems, academic setups, or small-scale infrastructures where simplicity and efficiency are prioritized. To address these challenges, this study introduces a simple and efficient real-time system monitoring framework developed using shell scripting. The proposed approach utilizes standard UNIX/Linux command-line utilities, eliminating the need for additional software installations while ensuring compatibility across different UNIX-based systems.
