Abstract

Ironing continues to be a lengthy and sometimes monotonous activity in domestic chores; especially among those with busy schedules who need to ensure efficiency and minimize risks of harming delicate fabrics. This document discusses the design and development of an intelligent ironing machine that performs ironing tasks using embedded computing and multi-sensor fabric identification. Unlike traditional irons that depend entirely on the manually chosen temperatures and user discretion, the developed system uses a network of sensors to detect the fabric type at runtime and adapt its ironing settings to prevent scorching, shine marks or any other form of fabric damage. The ironing machine has a structure that consists of a frame with a mechanism to hang clothes for ironing in suspension rather than laying them on a flat board. The steam generation subsystem operates together with a vertically moving ironing head that goes up and down the garment ironing it and ensuring heat and humidity distribution throughout the fabric surface. To ensure users’ safety from steam during ironing, the system is designed with an operating chamber having an automatically closing door. Also, it is equipped with a touch screen interface that enables users to choose a fabric program and see what fabric type is selected with the temperature requirements.
