Abstract

Diving into the world of concrete, normal concrete is widely used in construction but poses environmental challenges due to significant carbon dioxide emissions from cement production. Incorporating oil palm shells (OPS) and palm oil fuel ash (POFA) into concrete offers a sustainable alternative, utilizing waste products from the palm oil industry and reducing environmental impact. Experimental studies have examined the use of OPS and POFA as partial replacements for coarse aggregate and cement in concrete, with curing periods of 7, 28, and 56 days. The mechanical, durability, and flexural properties of these beams were tested and compared with conventional concrete. Additionally, some advanced techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to analyze the microstructural properties of proposed concretes. However, the results affirm that replacing cement and aggregates with oil palm waste is particularly advantageous for mass concreting. The SEM analysis exhibited that the OPS concrete has a heterogeneous microstructure with irregular pore distribution and varied particle sizes, influencing its mechanical properties and durability
