        Special Issue Description

The Clean Air Act Amendments’ stricter restrictions on volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions have prompted an analysis of alternative VOC remediation strategies. Biofiltration and suspended growth reactors are two relevant technologies for gas phase treatment. Through the use of a bed of biologically active particles, biofiltration purges pollutants from gas streams. An aerobic suspended-growth reactor (SGR) eliminates VOCs by biologically processing contaminated air that is bubbled through an aqueous solution of active microorganisms. For the removal of a standard VOC (toluene) from gas streams, this study compared the effectiveness of a normal compost biofilter to an SGR. Evaluating how mass loading affected process efficiency was the goal. Major performance factors were (1) mass emitted and elimination capacity, (2) off-gas concentrations exiting each kind of reactor for varying mass loadings, and (3) removal efficiencies attained by each type of reactor. According to the findings, SGRs can efficiently detoxify gases that contain VOCs. The biofilters and SGRs both produced VOC removal rates between 96 and 99.7% for mass loadings between 5 and 30 mg/l-h. At high mass loadings, the biofilter media dried. Process performance in the SGRs was affected by the presence of an unidentified colored compound at mass loadings higher than 17 mg/l-h.

        Manuscript Submission information

Manuscripts should be submitted online by registering and logging in to this link. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed.
Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent on email address:[email protected] for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
