        Special Issue Description

Despite being a clean and sustainable energy source, geothermal energy production nevertheless has certain negative effects on the environment. Before choosing to build a geothermal field, both the advantages and disadvantages of this environmental impact, as well as potential mitigation strategies, must be taken into account. Surface disturbances, fluid withdrawal’s physical effects, heat effects, and chemical discharge are the main geothermal development in the environment. The biological environment will also be affected by all of these elements. There are also some economic and social implications, as there are with other industrial activities. To investigate the environmental effects of exploiting geothermal resources, Iceland initiated an enforcement program in the early 1990s. Regarding the high-temperature geothermal resources being developed in Iceland, work has started to address the environmental challenges. A method for mapping steam caps was created, and research was done on the activity of microearthquakes in geothermal regions. Networks for observing changes in land elevation and gravity have their foundations in place. For the levels of sulfur and mercury gases, baseline values were established. Studies of groundwater monitoring were put into effect. Geothermally produced sulfur gases and mercury were examined for their atmospheric dispersion and interactions. The ability of aerial thermographic survey tools to identify and map changes in surface manifestations over time was demonstrated after they underwent refinement and testing. A Geothermal Implement Agreement (GIA) was established in 1997 by the International Energy Association to promote the use of geothermal energy globally; its environmental Annex has been actively implemented, with several projects still in progress.

        Manuscript Submission information

Manuscripts should be submitted online by registering and logging in to this link. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed.
Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent on email address:[email protected] for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
