[This article belongs to Special Issue Important difficulties with high cycle fatigue under section ijcmm, ijcmm in (ijcmm, ijcmm)]

        Special Issue Description

Due to the high frequency of high cycle fatigue (HCF)-related failures in US Air Force gas turbine engines during the past few years, high maintenance costs, and potential negative consequences on operational readiness, the Air Force has decided to reevaluate the design and life management processes for HCF. The very empirical nature of the practices now in place becomes painfully obvious as efforts are made to identify the primary contributors to HCF failures and identify strategies for decreasing their frequency. Furthermore, anything other than a highly empirical approach is currently impossible because of the absence of detailed information on vibratory loading, the dynamic response of components, and material capabilities under HCF, particularly in the presence of initial or in-service damage. Fatigue loading on materials that have already experienced damage from other causes has frequently been discovered to be the cause of high cycle fatigue (HCF) failures in materials used in rotating components of gas turbine engines. Damage may exist in the form of initial material or manufacturing flaws or it may appear after use. Low cycle fatigue (LCF), foreign object damage (FOD), and fretting have been identified as three main in-service damage factors that can each affect the HCF resistance either separately or in combination. Methodologies for handling such damage when determining material allowables are taken into consideration.

        Manuscript Submission information

Manuscripts should be submitted online by registering and logging in to this link. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed.
Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent on email address:[email protected] for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
