        Special Issue Description

A wireless mobile Client Device may refer to any computer with access to data from another computer. In this sense, a server may support a network composed of many client devices in the form of desktop PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets. A purpose-built network may comprise different types of client devices (e.g. thin clients, zero clients), as detailed by factors such as onboard storage. A client-based approach to setting up a communication link. The procedure entails receiving a request for a communications link from a handheld application and accessing a component of the device API to configure the hardware of the device to implement the communications link. With a server, a wireless communication link is created. Based on the type of wireless communications link and the type of handheld device, an optimized protocol is automatically implemented between a client communications component and the server. The communications link is established by the communications component working with a device API component to configure the hardware of the handheld device.
