Using Light Emitting Diode in diagnosing capacitors

        Special Issue Description

        When current flows through a light-emitting diode (LED), it emits light. Electrons in the semiconductor recombine, releasing energy in the form of photons (Energy packets). The energy required for electrons to cross the semiconductor’s band gap determines the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of photons). Multiple semiconductors or a layer of light-emitting phosphor on the semiconductor device are used to generate white light. LEDs are used as status indicators and displays on a variety of equipment and installations due to their low energy consumption, low maintenance, and small size. Large-area LED displays are used in stadiums, as dynamic decorative displays, and as freeway message signs. LED devices can outlast the power electronic components needed to drive them in terms of longevity. Failures of aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs), primarily as a result of aging and temperature impacts, are the leading contributors to the breakdown of power electronic equipment. This emphasizes how crucial it is to provide reliable power converter architectures and control strategies that permit the assessment of electrolytic capacitor status while retaining the functionality of converter controllers even in the case of capacitor failure. Due to the unique architecture and low ratings of the most modern LED lighting systems, this work presents a novel condition-monitoring system for the identification of capacitor problems on a fault-tolerant LED driver.
