        Special Issue Description

        Modern architecture, also known as modernist architecture, was an architectural movement or architectural style based on cutting-edge construction techniques, particularly the use of reinforced concrete, glass, and steel; the notion that form should follow function; a commitment to minimalism; and a rejection of ornament. Additionally, architects started experimenting with novel materials and methods, which provided them with more leeway to design novel forms. Modern architecture is a trend that began in the early twentieth century as a result of technological, mechanical, and material breakthroughs as well as a desire to abandon traditional architectural styles and create something wholly novel and functional. The movement was sparked by the technological advancements brought about by the industrial revolution, which meant that architecture not only had to embody the moral imperatives of the contemporary day but also reflect its spirit. Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Groupies, Louis Sullivan, and others were prominent members of this movement. The movement’s catchphrase, “Form follows Function,” was coined by one of the most well-known figures in the modern architectural movement, Louis Sullivan. This phrase means that a structure’s function, not aesthetics, should serve as the basis for its design. Because only wealthy people could appreciate good architecture in the past, modernists hope that this movement will close the social gap in society and provide a better standard of living than in the previous era.
