        Special Issue Description

        The question of whether or not to require the labeling of food produced from genetically modified (GM) crops using recombinant DNA technology is central to the ongoing debate about the risks and benefits of using biotechnology in agriculture. The US government regulates GM food technologies, but once approved, GM crops are considered to be ” substantially equivalent, in terms of safety to their conventional counterparts. As a result, there is no federal requirement to label food containing GM ingredients. Several states have introduced and voted on bills and ballot initiatives requiring mandatory labeling. Connecticut, Maine, and Vermont were the first states to approve some form of mandatory labeling. Under US law, companies may voluntarily label food products to inform consumers whether or not they contain ingredients derived from GM crops. India proposed a draught rule in 2006 requiring the labeling of all genetically modified (GM) foods and products derived from them. In this paper, we use primary and secondary market data to assess the economic implications of mandating GM food labeling. GMO labeling reduces the demand for genetically modified foods. The signal contained in the GMO label influences consumer choice as well. Even a neutral GMO label may cause consumers to focus on the negative aspects of GMOs, disregard price information, and become less likely to purchase the product category.
