        Genetic engineering is of great interest due to the wide range of potential applications in a wide range of scientific fields. This set of technologies allows for novel practices such as the development of drought-resistant plant species, the modification of human pluripotent stem cells, and even the creation of genetically modified monkeys. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and replicate using their genetic machinery. Bacteria developed an ingenious adaptive defense system, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, to protect themselves from this type of invader (CRISPR). Researchers quickly realized that a specific type of CRISPR system, CRISPR-Cas9, could be modified into a simple and efficient genetic engineering technology with several advantages over existing systems. This discovery triggered a genetics revolution, with new and improved CRISPR systems being used in numerous in vitro and in vivo experiments in recent years. This review explains how CRISPR-Cas systems work as a means of bacterial immunity against phage invasion and how these systems were designed to generate new genetic manipulation tools. New CRISPR-Cas technologies and their potential applications in healthcare and other fields of science are also discussed. This technique, however, had limitations. There was a risk of mismatch and interference of the exogenous gene with endogenous sequences that were not meant to be altered because it relied on the random insertion of a DNA fragment.
