      Special Issue Description

On implantable medical equipment, biofilms can also develop. A central venous catheter is one example of a device that might develop bacterial biofilms on its surface. On completely implanted devices, such as artificial hip or knee joints, biofilms can also develop. For instance, Escherichia coli biofilms are regularly seen on urinary catheters . Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a species that is not typically a component of the body’s microflora but that can build biofilms and lead to illnesses. It easily creates biofilms and can infect several organs, including the skin and lungs. Biofilm-related infections have been linked to considerable morbidity and mortality. Patients with implantable medical devices and those who have compromised immune systems are especially at risk. Treatment for infections may be challenging. This is because biofilms are difficult for the immune system to deal with and they are almost a thousand times more resistant to antibiotics than free-floating bacteria. When implantable medical devices cause infections, the device is frequently taken out.
