Surgical oncology, which focuses on the surgical treatment of malignancies, especially malignant tumors, is the application of surgery to oncology. Surgery is the oldest method of treating cancer. For various illnesses and cancer types, it is frequently used with medical oncology therapies like chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy as well as radiation oncology therapies. Surgery is a significant medical operation with potentially life-altering side effects for certain people. Others will recover quickly from surgery with few complications. In addition to aiding in the diagnosis, staging, and support of cancer treatment, it offers the best chance to halt many different types of cancer. Surgery helps identify the location and stage of different types of cancer. When doctors remove colon polyps that could develop into cancer, for example, it can even stop cancer from occurring in a person who is particularly at risk. Following cancer therapy, reconstructive surgery returns shape or function. Surgery can also be used to treat disease-related symptoms; this is known as palliative surgery. Surgical oncologists remove tumors to help your body get rid of malignant cells. There are various distinctive surgical techniques used by professionals: Curative: When a surgical oncologist can remove a tumor that is only present in one site. You might need chemotherapy or radiation treatment either before or after. Disproving: Oncologists perform this procedure when it would be too risky to remove the entire tumor. They remove as much of it as they can, and the remaining pieces are treated with radiation or chemotherapy. Supportive: A doctor may recommend this type of surgery to help other cancer therapies work more effectively. Modern surgical techniques are less invasive, involve a range of surgical tools, are less painful, and heal faster. The most effective surgical oncology technique is cryosurgery. Other techniques are Electrical procedure, Using laparoscopic techniques, Laser technique, Mohs surgery, Robotic surgery, radiofrequency ablation, Thermoscopic Surgery, and other surgical methods. While keeping in mind the fundamentals of surgical oncology addressing the four areas of tumor excision, regional lymph node removal, treatment of regional recurrence, and distant metastasis, paradigms in surgical oncology have changed from maximum tolerated treatment to minimal effective treatment. New surgical procedures have made it possible to reduce morbidity while maintaining or improving oncologic outcomes in cases of breast, ovarian, rectal, and soft tissue sarcomas, bringing the ideal closer to reality. This special issue presents articles on the many surgical approaches, ranging from minimally invasive surgery to the most complex and challenging cancer operations.
