Special Issue Description

The field of surgery is witnessing an incredible collaboration between humans and technology, which has the potential to raise the level of accuracy and effectiveness of surgeries to levels never seen before. New methods, new technology, new techniques, and new ideas for utilizing existing systems or technology. There is always something new to add in terms of medical technology advancements. The science of surgical care has advanced more in the last 50 years. Natural and artificial organ transplants; xenotransplants (organs transplanted from non-human animals), neurosurgery (brain surgery); coronary artery bypass surgery; laparoscopic surgery; and “laser” surgery were all uncommon 50 years ago, but they are now becoming more common. Computers, like many other aspects of our lives, have expanded the practice of medicine into previously uncharted territory. Indeed, thanks to the Internet, “telemedicine” has become more than a possibility: surgeons will soon be able to operate on patients remotely via live “webcasts.” Modern surgical advances have enabled surgeons to be more precise during procedures, lowering risks and recovery time for patients. Artificial intelligence, surgical robots, 3D printing, and new imaging methods are already being used in a variety of procedures. But the future of surgery is much more than that.
