Role of innate and adaptive immunity in vaccines

Special Issue Description

The availability of effective vaccines has had the greatest impact on improving public health by preventing infectious diseases. Despite numerous successful vaccines, there are still old and new emerging pathogens for which no vaccine is available. A better understanding of how vaccines work to provide protection will aid in the improvement of current vaccines as well as the development of effective vaccines against pathogens for which we do not have a suitable control method. Recent studies have focused on innate immunity as the first line of host defense and its role in inducing adaptive immunity; such studies have been a focus of intense research, which will reveal the immunological mechanisms by which vaccines work for protection. TLRs, a family of receptors for pathogen-associated molecular patterns on innate immune system cells, play an important role in detecting and responding to microbial infections. In addition, the innate immune system influences the quantity and quality of long-term T and B cell memory, as well as protective immune responses to pathogens. Limited research suggests that vaccines that mimic natural infection and/or pathogen structure are effective in inducing long-term protective immunity. A better understanding of the similarities and differences in molecular and cellular events in host responses to vaccination and pathogen infection would allow for the rationale for the development of novel preventive measures against a wide range of pathogens. We invite you to submit your research findings in this special issue, which aims to present the mechanism of action of vaccines and the importance of innate immunity and adaptive immunity in the process.
