Abstract

Background: For centuries, the Unani system of medicine has addressed liver diseases through principles that recommend specific therapies tailored to each ailment. Purpose: To analyze the therapeutic principles and Unani medications recorded for the treatment of liver diseases. Data Sources: Unani literary books in both Urdu and English were consulted, along with original e-research papers serving as databases. Limitation: This paper primarily focuses on the therapeutic principles related to liver diseases. However, it also sheds light on several essential hepatoprotective drugs. Result & Conclusion: According to Unani Medicine, liver ailments predominantly stem from a disturbance in the temperament of humours and the accumulation of morbid material (mawad-e-fasida). Therefore, therapeutic interventions focus on restoring equilibrium by counteracting the pathological temperament through medicinal and dietary approaches, complemented by Ilaj bitTadbeer (regimenal therapy). Additionally,the removal of raddi akhlat (morbid humours) is facilitated through istafraag (evacuation). Several Unani remedies, including Kasni (Cichorium intybus), Ward (Rosa damascena), and Zafran (Crocus sativus), have demonstrated hepatoprotective properties in animal models.
