Abstract
Chemotherapy remains a cornerstone of cancer treatment, yet severe side effects, including cardiotoxicity often limit its clinical application. Doxorubicin, a widely used anticancer drug, is particularly associated with dose-dependent toxicities that impact the heart, liver, and kidneys. In search of complementary approaches to mitigate these adverse effects, this study evaluates the protective potential of hydro-alcoholic extracts from Phyllanthus amarus and Sida acuta, two medicinal plants with known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Using the chick embryo model, a wellestablished and cost-effective system for studying developmental toxicology, this research investigates the effects of these plant extracts on Doxorubicin-induced toxicity.
The study involved administering Doxorubicin to developing chick embryos, with and without co-treatment of plant extracts. Biochemical assays assessed changes in toxicity markers, while histopathological analyses evaluated tissue damage in the heart, liver, and kidneys. Results revealed that embryos co-treated with the plant extracts showed significant reductions in toxicity markers, improved antioxidant enzyme activities, and preserved tissue integrity compared to the Doxorubicin-only group. These findings suggest that Phyllanthus amarus and Sida acuta can effectively mitigate oxidative stress and cellular damage induced by Doxorubicin.
This research highlights the potential of these medicinal plants as complementary agents to enhance the safety of chemotherapy. Their protective effects offer a promising alternative to conventional cardioprotective strategies, emphasizing the importance of integrating natural compounds into cancer treatment protocols. Further studies are recommended to explore their clinical applicability and molecular mechanisms, paving the way for novel therapeutic interventions that reduce chemotherapy-induced side effects while maintaining antitumor efficacy.
