Abstract
Earth has always had an abundance of natural resources, but as the number of people on the planet grew, so did their needs, and they were taken from the environment at an ever-increasing rate. Depending on the kind of pollutant, the duration and intensity of exposure, as well as other elements like an individual’s health risks and the combined effects of several pollutants or stressors, the effects of air pollution on the human body might differ. Situated in the center of the state’s mining belt, the city of Rourkela occupies an area of 200 km2. The main objectives are to study the impact of development related environmental threat in the study area and to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution of air pollutants in the study area. NDVI, NDBI and LST has been calculated using Landsat 8, 9 Satellite data which was originally derived from USGS Earth Explorer for our analysis of the year 2014 and 2024. CO, NO2 and SO2 data collected from Copernicus Sentinel 5P Satellite data was derived from TROPOMI Explorer for our analysis for the period 2018–2019 and 2024–2025. Based on the results of the NDVI, NDBI, LST and air pollutants’ (SO2, CO and NO2) data analysis, it can be inferred that rapid growth of industries and urbanization in the region have led to environmental degradation of the area, which has halted normal functioning of the ecosystem in that region leading to biodiversity loss along with rise in health related issues in the region.
