Abstract
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious medical condition where blood clots develop in the deep veins, most often in the lower limbs. While it is traditionally associated with immobility, athletes are also at risk due to factors like prolonged travel, injuries, dehydration, and genetic predispositions. This paper explores the role of physiotherapists in preventing, detecting, and rehabilitating DVT in athletes. Preventive strategies include promoting hydration, active recovery, circulatory exercises, and appropriate posture during travel. Early detection of DVT symptoms, such as unilateral swelling, pain, redness, and distended veins, is critical for timely medical intervention. For rehabilitation, physiotherapists employ gradual mobilization, compression therapy, strengthening exercises, and long-term lifestyle education to ensure safe recovery and prevent complications like post-thrombotic syndrome. This well-rounded approach not only reduces the chances of recurrence but also helps athletes regain confidence and maintain their long-term health as they return to their sport. By highlighting the unique risk factors for athletes and providing evidence-based recommendations, this study underscores the importance of physiotherapists in managing DVT and safeguarding athletic performance.
