Abstract

Objective: To develop and evaluate a topical anti-acne gel formulated using aqueous extracts of coriander (Coriandrum sativum) and garlic (Allium sativum). The study aims to assess the antibacterial efficacy of the gel against acne-causing bacteria, specifically Propionibacterium acnes. Methods: 1.Extraction: Coriander Extract: Aqueous extraction was performed by soaking coriander seeds in distilled water, followed by filtration. Garlic Extract: Non-chemical extraction involved mixing crushed garlic with honey in a 1:1 ratio (w/v). 2. Formulation of Gel: Ingredients: Aqueous extracts of coriander and garlic, gelling agents (e.g., carbopol 940), preservatives, and distilled water. Procedure: The extracts were mixed with the gelling agent. 3.Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity: Agar Dilution Method: The antibacterial activity of the gel formulations was assessed by incorporating different concentrations of the gel into agar plates inoculated with P. 4.Formulation Testing: Physical Characteristics: Appearance, color, and consistency of the gel were noted. Spreadability: The ease of spreading the gel was tested using a spreadability apparatus. Extrudability: The force required to extrude the gel from a tube was measured. pH: The pH of the gel formulations was determined using a pH meter. Viscosity: The viscosity of the gel was measured using a viscometer. Results: 1.Antibacterial Activity: The gel formulations exhibited significant antibacterial activity against P. acnes and S. epidermidis. 1.Formulation F1: Drug Content: F1 had the highest drug content at 94%, suggesting efficient incorporation of the active ingredients. Stability: F1demonstrated the greatest stability, with no significant changes in physical characteristics. Zone of Inhibition: F1 produced the largest zones of inhibition against both bacterial strains, confirming its potent antibacterial properties. Conclusion: The topical gel formulated with aqueous extracts of coriander and garlic, particularly formulation F1, demonstrated strong antibacterial properties against P. acnes and S. epidermidis. The gel also exhibited favorable physical characteristics, stability, and high drug content. These findings suggest that the coriander and garlic extract gel, especially formulation F1, is a promising candidate for an effective and natural topical anti-acne treatment.
