Abstract
Background: The Gayatri Mantra, a sacred Vedic chant, is traditionally believed to offer numerous benefits, including mental clarity, stress reduction, and cognitive enhancement. Despite anecdotal evidence supporting these claims, scientific research on its neurophysiological effects, especially within educational settings, remains limited. This study investigates the impact of chanting the Gayatri Mantra on brain activity, stress levels, and cognitive performance among 1200 students in the Allied Health Sciences program at Paramedical College, Desh Bhagat University. Methods: This prospective cohort study involved 1200 students (aged 18-25) randomly assigned to either the experimental group (chanting the Gayatri Mantra for 20 minutes daily for 6 weeks) or the control group (no chanting practice). Neurophysiological parameters such as EEG (brainwave activity), heart rate variability (HRV), and cortisol levels were measured before and after the intervention. Cognitive function was assessed through tests of attention, memory, and executive function. Psychological outcomes were evaluated using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Profile of Mood States (POMS). Results: The experimental group exhibited significant improvements in brainwave activity (increased alpha and theta waves), indicating enhanced relaxation and mental clarity. Cortisol levels and HRV showed marked improvement, suggesting reduced stress. Cognitive function demonstrated improvements in attention, memory, and problem-solving tasks. Psychological assessments revealed greater mood stability and reduced stress and anxiety in the experimental group Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the neurophysiological effects of chanting the Gayatri Mantra. The findings suggest that mantra-based practices can enhance cognitive performance, reduce stress, and improve emotional well-being, thus offering a beneficial tool for students to manage stress and improve academic performance.
