Abstract
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a remarkable herb with a rich history that stretches back over 4, 000 years. It has played an important role in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda, Unani, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Cultivated widely in places like India, the Mediterranean, and North Africa, fenugreek’s seeds and leaves have been used to treat a variety of ailments, from digestive and respiratory issues to skin problems and inflammation. Recent scientific studies are beginning to confirm these traditional uses, showcasing fenugreek’s potential in managing chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and hormonal imbalances. The herb is packed with bioactive compounds like soluble fiber, saponins, flavonoids, and alkaloids (especially trigonelline), which contribute to its many health benefits, including regulating blood sugar, reducing inflammation, and aiding digestion. This review takes a closer look at the fenugreek’s traditional applications across cultures and how it has become an essential part of modern healthcare. By exploring its historical significance, chemical composition, and the latest scientific findings, we aim to provide a thorough understanding of fenugreek’s therapeutic potential. As more clinical studies uncover its wide-ranging benefits, fenugreek is gaining recognition as a valuable natural remedy, bridging the gap between ancient knowledge and contemporary medicine.
