Abstract

Objective: Effective pain management during and after surgery is vital for ensuring patient comfort and promoting recovery. While intravenous (IV) paracetamol and fentanyl are commonly administered for pain relief, their effectiveness in elective surgeries continues to be a subject of debate. Methods: In this future-oriented randomized controlled experiment the goal was to investigate the effectiveness of administering IV paracetamol and IV fentanyl for managing pain during and after scheduled elective surgeries. Participants undergoing elective surgeries were randomly designated to receive either IV paracetamol or IV fentanyl as part of their multimodal pain management plan. Measurements were taken for pain levels opioid use during the surgery opioid needs post-surgery time between the first request for pain relief and pain levels. Results:In this study a total of one hundred patients were included with half of them receiving intravenous (IV) paracetamol and the other half receiving IV fentanyl. The pain levels during surgery were comparable between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, those in the IV fentanyl group showed significantly lower pain levels after surgery at various intervals compared to the IV paracetamol group (p < 0.05). The amount of opioid used during surgery was higher in the IV fentanyl group (p 0.05). Patients in the IV fentanyl group also took longer to request their first dose of pain relief compared to those in the IV paracetamol group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Both IV paracetamol and IV effectively manage pain during and after elective procedures. However, IV fentanyl offers stronger postoperative analgesia and prolongs the time before the first request for additional pain relief compared to IV paracetamol. It’s essential to consider the higher opioid use associated with fentanyl and its potential side effects. For this reason, selecting the right pain reliever should be personalized based on the patient’s needs and the details of the surgery.
