Abstract
Medicinal plants have long served as invaluable resources for treating human ailments, with countless species still awaiting scientific exploration and validation. Abelmoschus palianus and Barleria mysorensis are two such botanicals with rich ethnomedicinal heritage but limited pharmacological characterization. This review presents a detailed comparative analysis of these two species, examining their botanical descriptions, geographic distribution, traditional applications, phytochemical constituents, pharmacological properties, toxicological profiles, and therapeutic potential. Abelmoschus palianus, native to Southeast Asia, is primarily used for its mucilage-rich extracts in treating gastrointestinal and respiratory conditions. Meanwhile, Barleria mysorensis, endemic to southern India, has long been employed in traditional medicine systems for managing wounds, inflammation, liver disorders, and microbial infections. Both plants harbor a wide array of bioactive compounds flavonoids, iridoid glycosides, phenolic acids, and triterpenoids that contribute to their observed therapeutic effects. While B. mysorensis enjoys stronger pharmacological validation through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective studies, A. palianus remains comparatively underexplored. This review highlights not only their individual medicinal value but also their potential roles in integrative healthcare and natural product drug discovery. It underscores the urgent need for comprehensive phytochemical and pharmacological investigations, particularly for A. palianus, to support its inclusion in evidence-based herbal medicine. The study concludes with suggestions for future research, emphasizing clinical translation and standardized extract development for both species.
