Abstract
The present article shows some light on various nutritional aspects of a rural society in eastern Uttar Pradesh, India. The findings are based on a sample survey conducted in 2003-04 by Centre of Population Studies, Department of Statistics, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India in which data were collected from 1800 households of the study area. Various nutritional aspects include anthropometric measurements, consumption of various foods in a day, and daily energy intake along with various food habits. In the study area, caste’ is a major determinant of socio-economic status of a household; hence differentials have been studied according to ‘caste group’. Findings show major differences in different caste groups. The study also shows differentials among adult males and females as well as male and female children. Although the results relate to a period of about 20 years back, but these may work as a benchmark for similar further studies in the context of present-day situation.
