Abstract
Natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, and wildfires, pose risks to human life, infrastructure, and the environment. Many of the technological innovations are there, but in managing such disasters, there still is room for inefficiencies resulting from communication delay, unavailability of real-time data, and poor coordination at times. The inefficiencies lead to response times that are too long, inappropriate allocation of resources, and increased vulnerability to the impacts of disasters. Integration of internet of things (IoT) technologies in disaster management systems can be a solution to these challenges. With IoT, the potential of a fast and insightful environment is leveraged for decision-making with rapid data transmission through devices and sensors that can monitor the environment. This study covers an extended case study of how IoT influences disaster management: the potential and effectiveness of using sensors with IoT-enabled flood monitoring, earthquake detection, and wildfire management. In employing sensors with IoT, including water level sensors, accelerometers, and smoke detectors, it tries to measure the readiness in delivering early warnings and reducing the disaster risks. The research also includes an IoT framework used for monitoring and alert generation in real time with the support of communication networks and data analytics platforms. Such a framework’s performance is analyzed concerning accuracy, response time, and reliability. The challenges identified during implementation, including sensor placement, network reliability, and data security, are also pointed out with improvement suggestions for future development. This paper concludes that IoT-enabled systems can revolutionize disaster management through the reduction of response times, improvement in coordination among stakeholders, and decreased impact of natural disasters. The results will form part of a growing knowledge base on smart disaster management and focus on the transformational capacity of IoT for resilient and sustainable communities.
