Abstract
The growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic dyes has led to increased interest in natural dye sources. Spathodea campanulata, commonly known as the African Tulip Tree, is a potential source of natural dye due to its vibrant floral pigments. This study focuses on the extraction, yield, stability, and application of the dye obtained from Spathodea campanulata flowers. The dye was extracted using an aqueous method, and its yield was analyzed. A comprehensive shelf-life study was conducted to evaluate the dye’s stability under varying conditions, including exposure to light, temperature variations, and pH changes. The results indicate that the extracted dye exhibits significant color stability under neutral and mildly acidic conditions but degrades under highly alkaline and extreme temperature conditions. The dye was then applied to cotton fabric using different mordants to assess its binding efficiency, wash fastness, and overall fabric appearance. The results highlight that metal mordants enhance dye fixation and improve color retention. This study establishes Spathodea campanulata as a viable source of natural dye with promising applications in the textile industry. The findings contribute to the growing body of research on plant-based dyes, promoting sustainable dyeing practices while reducing the environmental hazards associated with synthetic dyes. Further studies on optimizing extraction techniques and mordanting processes could enhance the commercial viability of this natural dye.
