Abstract
Finger millet (Eleusine coracana) is one of the cereal food and feed crops grown in Ethiopia. The crop is considered a low input crop. Unavailability of improved varieties was realized as one of the major production constraints at all potential areas in southern Ethiopia. The present study was conducted with an objective to identify the adaptive, preferred and better yielding finger millet varieties for further demonstration and pre-scale up. The experiment was conducted on the fields of four farmers in two consecutive years of 2021 and 2022 in East Badawacho, Southern Ethiopia. Five improved finger millet varieties namely Axum, Tessema, Bako-09, Addis-01, and Meba, including the local check cultivars were included in the experiment. Four farmers who hosted the experiments were considered as replications. Farmers ranked the varieties based on their own criteria. The grain yield data were subjected to statistical analysis using SAS software; and we observed significant differences among most improved varieties with respect to local checks across seasons. A variety of Axum and Tesema were out yielded (43.37 and 41.87 qt/ha), respectively and preferred by farmers across seasons. However, in most cases, the variety Meba showed non-significant differences and gave the low yield (28.74 qt/ha) compared to the local check across seasons. Thus, we recommend the varieties Axum and Tessema for the study areas and similar agroecologies.
