Abstract
Calotropis gigantea is a genus in the family Apocynaceae that grows in tropical and semitropical climates. India is home to this plant’s distribution. In Hindi, it is referred to as sweta arka. It is well known for its medicinal and ethnobotanical values. Calotropis gigantea, in particular, has a history of use in the treatment of many health-related issues, including disorders of the respiratory system, inflammation, and skin infections. Calotropis gigantea is a well-known and beneficial herb that is sometimes referred to as milkweed. The systematic position, colloquial names, vegetative characteristics, ecology and distribution, phytochemistry, and economic significance of Calotropis gigantea are all covered in this review paper. The plant is also known to possess diverse bioactive components, including Cardenolides, Flavonoids, Terpenoids, and Alkaloids, and possesses various ranges of pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antioxidant activities, among others. Recent research makes a case for therapeutics based on Calotropis, especially in relation to the management of chronic illness, notwithstanding the limitations of its toxicity and sustainable use.
