Role of Lifestyle Modifications in Controlling Hypertension in View of Traditional System of Medicine: An Appraisal

Abstract

Hypertension, a long-recognized condition, has been documented across various ancient medical systems including Chinese, Greeko-Arabic, and Indian Ayurvedic traditions. These traditional medicines identified correlations between pulse quality and vascular health, emphasizing the importance of managing arterial hardness. Historical figures, such as Huang Ti, Ali Ibn Abbas Majoosi, and Ibne Sina provided early insights linking dietary habits, such as salt intake, and mental stress to hypertension. Modern understanding further delineates hypertension into primary and secondary forms, with primary hypertension being multifactorial and constituting most cases. Preventing cardiovascular morbidity and death and successfully controlling blood pressure are the main objectives of hypertension management. Lifestyle modifications are pivotal in both preventing and treating hypertension. These include reducing alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, losing weight, reducing salt intake, engaging in regular physical activity, and following the DASH diet. Additionally, the traditional Unani concept of Ilaj bit Tadbeer, which involves modifications in six essential health prerequisites, plays a crucial role. These prerequisites include clean atmospheric air, a balanced diet and drink, physical activity and rest, mental activities and relaxation, proper sleep and wakefulness, and appropriate evacuation and retention processes. Each of these factors significantly impacts blood pressure regulation. Clean air, a nutritious diet, adequate physical and mental rest, and proper sleep patterns contribute to maintaining optimal blood pressure levels. Regular physical activity aids in waste excretion and prevents arterial hardening. Mental relaxation techniques help manage stress-related hypertension. Proper sleep and wakefulness maintain metabolic balance, preventing imbalances that could lead to hypertension. This comprehensive approach underscores the significance of integrating lifestyle modifications with traditional medicine principles for effective hypertension management.
