Development of 3D Avatar based ISL Dictionary for Public Places Terminology

Abstract

A synthetic animated Indian Sign Language (ISL) dictionary could be a great tool for deaf people to communicate their thoughts, opinions, and ideas to hearing people in the current computerized era. There is currently no ISL synthetic animated dictionary designed specifically for public places, despite the fact that there are numerous human-based video dictionaries available. In this article, the creation of a 4231-word ISL dictionary for various public places terminology using synthetic animation is described. The most commonly used ISL words at public places are classified and then translated into Signing Gesture Markup Language (SiGML), which uses a virtual 3D avatar to create the signs using artificial animations. The developed ISL dictionary can be used to automatically translate signs from spoken or written announcements at various public places. This ISL dictionary is used in the creation of a deaf public announcement system that uses artificial animations to display spoken announcements in ISL. Additionally, the created dictionary can be very helpful for deaf people’s education and assistance when they visit public spaces.
