Abstract
Impressionism, an influential art style that thrived from the 19th to the early 20th century, originated in Paris in the 1860s, with Claude Monet recognized as its pioneer. This movement arose as a reaction against the advent of photography, advocating for a novel representation of light and momentary impressions. Key contributors included Camille Pissarro, Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who collectively rejected the constraints of traditional public expectations and incorporated scientific methods to enhance the accuracy of tonal values in their work. Impressionist artists were distinguished by their use of visible, choppy brushstrokes and a preference for capturing natural light in outdoor settings rather than in studios. They innovated techniques such as chiaroscuro and favoured series paintings that explored light variations. The style marked a departure from fine lines and detailed realism, focusing instead on the dynamic effects of light and color. The development of Impressionism throughout the 20th century showcases its adaptability, reflected in varying styles, subjects, techniques, and color mediums. This period also saw the movement navigating public criticism and evolving socio-political and ideological contexts, underscoring its historical and artistic significance. This paper examines the impact of key figures like Louis Boudin, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Renoir, with a particular emphasis on Monet’s revolutionary role. Monet’s “Impression, Sunrise,” exhibited in 1872, was critiqued by Louis Leroy, who derogatorily labeled the style “Impressionism.” Monet adopted this term, solidifying the movement’s identity and legacy.
