Abstract

The Research regarding the ecosystem examines the impact of anthropogenic activities on soil conditions and water resources in the Vaigai reservoir catchment area, aligning with SDG 15’s targets for sustainable terrestrial ecosystem management. The research investigates how industrialization, urbanization, and modern agricultural practices affect soil properties and water resource quality. Physical parameters (moisture content, specific gravity, plasticity) and chemical properties (pH, electrical conductivity) were analyzed, along with soil nutrient levels (nitrates, phosphates, potassium). The findings reveal variations in soil nutrients influenced by agricultural management practices and climatic conditions, while upstream erosion contributes to changes in soil characteristics. This assessment supports SDG 15’s objectives by providing crucial data for sustainable land management and ecosystem protection, particularly addressing targets 15.3 (combating land degradation) and 15.1 (conservation of terrestrial ecosystems). The results show that we need a balanced approach to protect soil and water while keeping farms productive.

Keywords: Soil samples, physico-chemical parameters, industrialization, agricultural productivity, ecosystem management.
