The Boko Haram insurgency has greatly affected the socio-economic and educational systems of North East Nigeria. This paper examines the historical antecedents of the insurgency, analyzing how socio-political, economic, and ideological factors have contributed to its emergence and persistence. The study highlights the enduring impact of colonial legacies, socio-economic marginalization, and governance failures, which have collectively created fertile ground for the radicalization of disenfranchised populations. The insurgency’s deliberate targeting of educational institutions has resulted in the destruction of over 1,400 schools, displacement of millions of students and teachers, and a decline in literacy and enrollment rates, particularly for girls. Using a qualitative methodology, the study draws on secondary data from scholarly articles, government reports, and publications by international organizations to identify key themes such as the destruction of infrastructure, psychological trauma, and gender disparities in education. Guided by Frustration-Aggression Theory and Human Capital Theory, the study underscores the long-term implications of disrupted education on human capital development and socio-economic stability. The findings reveal how the insurgency perpetuates cycles of poverty and inequality, leaving the region further marginalized. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, including rebuilding infrastructure, providing mental health support, and addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality. By integrating theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence, this study contributes to understanding the critical role of education in conflict zones and offers actionable recommendations for fostering sustainable educational development.
