  • Check author guidelines: Each journal has specific formatting and submission requirements. Carefully review the author guidelines for your chosen journal before starting your manuscript preparation.

Craft Your Manuscript

  • Structure and content: Focus on clarity, conciseness, and logical flow. Ensure your manuscript adheres to the journal's structure and includes all necessary sections (e.g., abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, references).
  • Formatting: Follow the journal's formatting guidelines meticulously. Pay attention to font size, margins, line spacing, and citation style. Use a high-quality word processing software.
  • Ensure accuracy and readability: It is crucial that the references in your article lead directly to the same article. Avoid any ambiguous words and check for redundancy. Reading previously published articles can help in constructing a good article. Before submitting, go through the manuscript to make it accurate and readable through language editing.
  • Review the requirements to publish: Before submitting your article, review the requirements to publish, including the focus and scope, article processing charges, and copyright agreement. Ensure that you're on the right page and meet all the necessary requirements to ensure a smooth publication process.
  • Co-author information: Gather complete contact details and affiliations of all co-authors. Don't forget to communicate with your co-authors and credit them for their contributions. If you are writing your first article, don't hesitate to ask for help from your supervisor or colleagues.
  • Ethical considerations: Ensure your research adheres to ethical guidelines and disclose any potential conflicts of interest.
  • Copyright permissions: Obtain necessary permissions for any copyrighted material you've included in your manuscript.

The following is mandatory when submitting to STM:

Author Information
  • All authors listed on the manuscript must be added in the relevant tab during submission. Please have ready the names, emails, and affiliations of all the authors, and ensure the authors all qualify for authorship.
  • During submission, you will be requested to provide an author(s) contribution statement briefly describing the tasks of all individual authors.
File Requirements
  • A manuscript doc or do file generated from the submitted manuscript, and the source file.
  • All figures in JPEG/JPG/PNG formats, RGB color mode, with a resolution of 300 dpi, and complying with CC-BY licence.
  • Permissions need to be obtained for re-published/adapted/modified/partial figures, and it is the responsibility of the authors to acquire the licenses, to follow any citation instructions requested by third-party rights holders, and cover any supplementary charges. Uploaded figures will be embedded at the end of the submitted manuscript.
  • Tables should be directly inserted into the manuscript and in source form (doc, tex), not as figures. You should prepare the files accordingly.
Statements
  • Please ensure that the relevant ethical approval and consent details were received and are available on request by the editor or editorial office. You will be requested to declare involvement of any human or animal subjects, and inclusion of identifiable human data for the research during the submission process; declaration statements will be generated and automatically added to your manuscript. You do not need to include these statements in your source file.
  • STM requires some types of data to be provide in manuscripts or deposited in public, community-supported repositories, prior to publication of an associated STM manuscript
  • During submission, you will be requested to reply to a series of questions on the availability of the data used for the research. Based on your answers, a data availability statement will be generated and added to your manuscript. You therefore do not need to include a data statement in your source file.
Contribution to the Field

Ahead of submission, you should prepare a statement summarizing in 200 words your manuscript’s contribution to, and position in, the existing literature of your field. This should be written avoiding any technical language or non-standard acronyms. The aim should be to convey the meaning and importance of this research to a non-expert. (Note that you will NOT be able to provide a traditional cover letter.)

Funding and Payment
  • Details of all funding sources will be requested during submission and must be provided in a funding section of the manuscript, including grant numbers, if applicable. You should also mention funds received for open access publication fees, from your institution, library, or other grants.
  • Prepare details ahead of submission on whom the invoice needs to be addressed to. If you are affiliated with a member institution, you will be able to select the institution in the submission system payment tile.

This typically includes the manuscript ID, which is assigned to your manuscript when you submit it to the Journal. You may also need to provide your email address or other identifying information.

Follow the instructions provided by the journal to make any necessary changes to your manuscript.
  • Peer Review Process
  • The first decision regarding your submission is made by the journal editor.
  • If required, the editor will send your manuscript to one or more reviewers – experts in your field.
  • Peer review acts as a filter to ensure only good research is published and improves the quality of submissions.
  • Expect to receive feedback from reviewers and the editor to enhance your manuscript.
  • Revision
  • If your paper is not rejected, you'll be asked to revise it based on reviewer feedback.
  • Use this opportunity to improve your paper by addressing comments and suggestions.
  • Respond to reviewer comments calmly and be prepared to justify your changes.
  • Article Transfer Service
  • STM offers an Article Transfer Service to streamline the editorial process.
  • If deemed suitable, your manuscript may be transferred to a more appropriate journal.
  • This saves time and effort for authors and ensures the contributions of reviewers are maximized.
  • Decision and publication
  • Wait for the editorial decision and, upon acceptance, follow the journal's instructions for final publication.
  • Follow any instructions provided by the editorial team regarding formatting and supplementary materials.
